IMMEDIATE DENTURES PITTSBURGH

An immediate denture may be the best solution when complete extractions of your remaining teeth is unavoidable. An immediate denture will allow you to avoid the embarrassment of living without teeth. We will begin the preparation for this procedure before your teeth are extracted.

We will take impressions of your existing teeth and gums to create accurate duplicates for placement after tooth removal. At your extraction appointment, your immediate dentures will be inserted creating a natural smile you can be proud of.

AFTER EXTRACTION

Great care should be taken to follow all postoperative instructions. Your gums and bone will change shape as they mature after extraction. We will do regular check-ups and maintenance to monitor these changes and minimize their impact. Tissue conditioners are soft liners that are used to help tissues mature as well as create an optimal fit during the post-operative period which typically lasts four to eight months. At your check-ups Dr. Kaur will determine if the tissue conditioner needs to be adjusted or replaced a number of times during the period of time that your tissue matures. A permanent reline of the immediate denture will ultimately be required to ensure a comfortable and an exact fit after your tissues have completed this maturation process.

Fabricating a second set of definitive dentures is a more viable alternative leaving this first set of “immediate” dentures as a back up like an old pair of eyeglasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to have immediate dentures put in the same day as tooth removal?

Yes, when you have a tooth extraction performed, it is possible to get an immediate denture on the same day.  However, not every patient is a candidate for immediate dentures, due to many factors regarding the reason for the extraction and the health of the gums and bone. If you’re interested in this option, discuss it with us before having your tooth removed. The process for preparing an immediate denture need to start before your teeth are extracted.

What are the advantages of an immediate denture?

There are several advantages of immediate dentures. They are placed on the same day as tooth removal. As a result, you will never need to appear in public with missing teeth. The shape, size and color of these immediate dentures are matched to your remaining teeth  which gives your teeth a natural appearance.

The immediate dentures protect your gums and tissue after extractions. They can significantly speed up your recovery. Typically you have to wait for several weeks after tooth extraction to receive your permanent dentures. If you  don’t get immediate dentures, you will first learn to speak and eat without teeth and then relearn to do the same things with permanent dentures.  The immediate dentures remove the need for you to learn how to do these things without teeth.

Are there any disadvantages of an immediate denture?

The major disadvantage is the additional cost. Almost everyone who gets an immediate denture also gets a permanent denture. The fit of an immediate denture is not as good as that of a permanent denture. This is because the immediate denture needs to be prepared before your teeth are extracted. Whereas the permanent denture is made after your tooth are extracted and the gums and tissue are healed.

How long does it take to get used to immediate dentures?

It takes about 30 days to get used to immediate dentures.
